Out walking one day I started thinking about how people are becoming more aware about the negative effect humans are having on the natural world. The news on television and in the papers all seemed to be negative and telling us about how our waste is polluting the land and the oceans, with very little advice on what we can actually do. I realised that it's hardly surprising people are feeling overwhelmed and suffering from eco-anxiety.
But becoming aware is a positive thing. I started to think about how things such as losing weight, leaving the car at home, and eating a plant-based diet are good for us as well as good for the planet. If we heal ourselves, we'll heal the earth.
Looking at my hand, I thought, instead of just focusing on our carbon footprint, maybe we should have a healing handprint. Having five things to focus on helps us to feel like we are doing something positive, and habits create momentum because the more we repeat them, the more ingrained they become. As we do our bit for the environment, it influences others around us to do the same. When they see us taking steps to live more sustainably, they are more likely to take these steps too. So, those five things we do will multiply as the influence we created spreads. And as each of the five things become second nature, we can replace it with another challenge.
Together we can make a difference!
